Job Description

Job Title: Chief of Component Engineering

Working Pattern: Full Time, Hybrid

Working location: Bristol

Grade: Level C

We have an exciting opportunity for a Chief of Component Engineering to join our Bristol team, supporting Mature programmes. This is a key role where you’ll act as the prime engineering and programme interface on behalf of Component Design, working closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to deliver safe, compliant, and high-quality solutions across the component lifecycle.

You will own and deliver validated Technical Component Designs across the whole Gas Turbine and Naval Packages to satisfy requirements within Systems and Sub-systems.

You’ll provide technical and programme leadership to your work package team, ensuring robust delivery to plan, effective risk management, and strong governance throughout. This role offers a strong mix of engineering leadership, strategic influence, and stakeholder management, making it ideal for someone looking to deepen their impact within a high-performing engineering organisation.

This role sits within our Bristol site, supporting component engineering leadership across Mature programmes and key delivery activities.

What you will be doing

With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:

  • Act as the prime Engineering and Programme interface on behalf of Component Design
    Own and deliver validated Technical Component Designs across the whole Gas Turbine and Naval Packages to satisfy requirements within Systems and Sub-systems
    Manage the safety aspect of any solution, ensuring HS&E policy is applied with a commitment to continuous improvement

  • Be the prime interface with commodity groups and external supply chain for component design, manufacturing and sub-system integration

  • Provide programme and technical leadership to the Work Package team, complying with Engineering Function policies throughout the work package lifecycle

  • Maintain a programme to ensure all activities are fully compliant with the RRMS

  • Develop and communicate the plan and budget to deliver the work on time, managing costs and resources to ensure delivery of the plan

  • Implement effective Risk Management and Project Gated Review processes for the package

  • Interface with the Defence Delivery Task Force to support delivery priorities and escalation routes

  • Ensure appropriate resources are deployed to meet programme commitments

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • Be qualified to at least degree level

  • Have domain knowledge commensurate with the focus and size of the work package, ideally within component engineering in an aerospace, defence, manufacturing, or similarly regulated environment

  • Demonstrate understanding of Product Change Control including PCB, Technical Review (DTA), APQP, and Product Introduction Lifecycle Management

  • Have project management experience in planning, controlling budgets, and driving to schedules

  • Bring engineering and technical competence sufficient to enable decision making commensurate with the size and complexity of the package

  • Have experience applying a systems approach or equivalent (e.g., Robust Design lead, Black Belt, etc.) and detail component design experience

  • Be a confident communicator with the ability to engage, influence, and align stakeholders across engineering, commodity groups, and the external supply chain

  • Have experience leading, developing, or coaching an engineering team to deliver through others
