EMC Specialist

At our headquarters in Hengelo advanced radar and combat management systems are being developed. Within Naval Engineering, the system engineering department accounts for the complete development cycle of products and solutions: concept definition, system design, system integration and validation.

The specialty engineering team is part of the system engineering department and its 40 specialists assure that during specification, analysis and design the specialty areas cybersecurity, safety, reliability, maintainability, diagnostics, data analytics and EMC get the attention that is required for complex systems development.

About the job

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is an essential and integral part of the engineering process of our high-end products and mission critical systems-of-systems. Our demanding customers (typically in the naval defense domain) expect our systems to operate flawlessly in an electronic-dense environment with strong transmitters, sensitive receivers and a variety of electronic systems.

The Thales Group has a Network of Excellence on EMC, consisting of over 100 participants from over 30 Thales sites worldwide. Thales has 15 labs all over the world, of which 4 have been accredited. In your role as an EMC specialist you will be part of the EMC expert team of the engineering community in Hengelo, The Netherlands. The EMC expert team in Hengelo currently consists of 8 EMC engineers, of which 5 are located in our EMC lab and 4 as EMC specialist in our specialty engineering team in the system engineering department.

You will be representing the system engineering department as a member of a project team that develops complex and challenging new products like a radar system or a system-of systems including such radar systems and other interfacing systems. All kinds of functional and non-functional design constraints need to be considered throughout the engineering lifecycle. Typically, you will be involved right from the start of a project. Or even earlier: during the bid phase where customer requirements have to be evaluated and assessed.

When you think it is necessary, you will not hesitate to interfere and to defend your own expert objectives. Dedication, determination, persuasiveness and pragmatism are some of your personal characteristics. Your EMC expertise, system engineering experience, communication skills, risk-based attitude and ability to bring forward the essential arguments, will keep our team and products on the required level of excellence.

Since we are delivering our products to customers all over the world, you will be challenged constantly with regard to customer demands and generic product requirements. Being able to participate effectively in making the right tradeoffs is essential. Thales is an active participant in NEN, CENELEC, ETSI, IEC and NATO committees, and you have gained experience in applying such norms and legislations, and in explaining these to stakeholders in a technical complex environment.

Your main tasks in an EMC engineering context are:

  • Analyze customer requirements and derive requirements for system design, on radar (sub)system level and/or at the level of a composed system-of-systems (integrated topside design);
  • Support the product development teams during the engineering stages from an EMC point of view;
  • Motivate and document design considerations and choices;
  • Perform numeric analyses and monitor the related experiments in the lab;
  • Support the qualification and verification processes (measurements, analyses, similarity);
  • Prepare EMC/EMI inspection on board and conduct/support on-board measurements occasionally;
  • Provide ad-hoc consultancy on EMC matters to the engineers and other stakeholders;
  • Stay updated with relevant topics in the EMC domain and introduce these when appropriate.

Since Thales is a large international organization, future career opportunities are always there.

About you

Are you the enthusiastic and motivated EMC specialist who is looking for a new challenge in a very interesting and complex engineering environment? In that case you might be the right person for the job!

  • Is familiar with system engineering principles in a complex technical context;
  • Has good communication skills (English, and preferably Dutch);
  • Has the ability to see the big picture, and is capable of interacting with major stakeholders;
  • Has well-developed analytical and conceptual skills, can think in processes.

What's in it for you

  • Become part of a great team in a high-tech, innovative international organization;
  • (International) opportunities for growth in tech-, management- and commercial roles;
  • Attention for personal development and own initiative;
  • A nice workplace in a modern building, where we value a good work-life balance and flexibility;
  • 40 leave days per year, travel expenses and a flexible benefits à la carte package with options like purchase/sale of leave hours, internet costs, bicycle plan, company fitness, trade union contribution or relocation costs.
