LOCATION(S): The role is based in London and Bristol with travel required to both as the platform is spread across both hubs and a handful of locations in India.

WORKING PATTERN: We work flexibly and operate a hybrid working pattern. You should expect to be in office at least two days per week with home-working available for the remaining days.

About this opportunity

Your mission: At the Heart of Helping Britain Prosper

At Lloyds Banking Group, our purpose is to Help Britain Prosper. As the UK's largest financial services group, we're entrusted by over 26 million customers to help them save for the future, make essential payments, and build their financial resilience. We're seeking a visionary engineering leader responsible for looking after the most critical asset in this relationship: our customers' data.

This is more than a technology role; it's a position of trust at the heart of the UK's financial ecosystem. You'll lead the Lab that looks after the single source of truth for our customer data, enabling us to deliver on our promise, to shape finance as a force for good. Your leadership will ensure that the data entrusted to us is protected with unwavering integrity, maintained with extraordinary resilience, and made available to power the services that millions of people and businesses rely on, every single day.

The Opportunity: Engineering the Future of Customer Data at Scale

This role will give you the opportunity to play a pivotal role in one of the UK's largest and boldest technology transformations initiative, part of a Group-wide £4 billion investment. You'll lead a large, multi-disciplinary Lab of highly skilled engineers who look after the critical systems that make customer data available for both operational and analytical use cases.

You'll inherit a broad technology landscape, from our resilient, modern mainframes that form the bedrock of our operations to innovative, cloud-native services that are shaping our future. Your challenge is to guide the strategic evolution of this platform, ensuring rock-solid stability for today while building the scalable, data-centric, and ethically driven foundation for the bank of tomorrow. You'll be the custodian of the second-largest dataset in the UK (second only to the NHS), presenting a unique opportunity to solve problems of engineering, security, and governance at an unparalleled scale.

What you'll be doing: Shape the work, shape the team, and shape the ways of working

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a large organization of multi-skilled senior engineers, fostering a culture of mastery, craftmanship, psychological safety, and profound ownership.

  • Define, and implement the technology vision and strategy for the Customer Data Services Platform, balancing the critical demands of modernisation, resilience, security, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Partner with Product Owners and senior leaders across the Group to ensure engineering is at the heart of our decision-making, translating strategic goals into a clear and executable technical roadmap.

  • Foster a "security and resilience by design" mentality, taking ultimate ownership for the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the Group's most critical data assets.

  • Champion the evolution of our engineering practices. You'll foster a modern engineering mentality, moving beyond traditional automation to embed advanced CI/CD, deep observability, and AI-assisted development practices that create a delightful developer experience.

What you’ll need

We know that amazing people can come from a variety of backgrounds, and we believe in hiring for potential and passion!

While we've outlined our ideal profile below, we're more interested in what you can achieve and your passion for leading at this scale. If you're excited by this challenge, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every single qualification listed

  • Experience leading and scaling large, multi-disciplinary engineering organizations (e.g., 40+ engineers), including experience managing other engineering managers.

  • A practitioner at the heart, with strong background in backend engineering, with demonstrable hands-on knowledge of technologies like building widely reused, highly available APIs, Java applications, Kafka, and databases.

  • Experience with private and public cloud platforms (e.g., OpenShift / GCP) and a firm grasp of modern architecture and migration strategies.

  • A practical understanding of resilience, security by design, and the operational demands of running high-availability, critical systems in a 24/7 environment.

  • A track record of attracting, retaining, and nurturing top engineering talent to build impactful, high-performing teams.

  • Experience in a highly regulated industry, such as financial services or payments, is highly desirable.

About working for us

Like the modern Britain we serve, we’re evolving. Investing billions in our people, data, and tech to transform the way we meet the ever-changing needs of our 26 million customers. We’re growing with purpose.

Our ambition is to be the leading UK business for diversity, equity and inclusion supporting our customers, colleagues and communities, and we’re committed to creating an environment in which everyone can thrive, learn and develop.

We're one of the first major organisations to set goals on diversity in senior roles, create a menopause health package, and a dedicated Working with Cancer Initiative.

We offer reasonable workplace adjustments for colleagues with disabilities, including flexibility in office attendance, location and working patterns. And, as a Disability Confident Leader, we guarantee interviews for a fair and proportionate number of applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the role with a disability, long-term health or neurodivergent condition through the Disability Confident Scheme.

We provide reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process to reduce or remove barriers. Just let us know what you need.

We also offer a wide-ranging benefits package, which includes:

  • A generous pension contribution of up to 15%

  • An annual performance-related bonus

  • Share schemes including free shares.

  • Benefits you can adapt to your lifestyle, such as discounted shopping.

  • Generous holiday allowance, with bank holidays on top

  • A range of wellbeing initiatives and generous parental leave policies

Want to do amazing work, that’s interesting and makes a difference to millions of people? Join our journey.

At Lloyds Banking Group, we're driven by a clear purpose; to help Britain prosper. Across the Group, our colleagues are focused on making a difference to customers, businesses and communities. With us you'll have a key role to play in shaping the financial services of the future, whilst the scale and reach of our Group means you'll have many opportunities to learn, grow and develop.

We keep your data safe. So, we'll only ever ask you to provide confidential or sensitive information once you have formally been invited along to an interview or accepted a verbal offer to join us which is when we run our background checks.  We'll always explain what we need and why, with any request coming from a trusted Lloyds Banking Group person.

We're focused on creating a values-led culture and are committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve. Together we’re building a truly inclusive workplace where all of our colleagues have the opportunity to make a real difference.
