The Engineering Team Lead manages a team of Software Engineers, overseeing technical contributions, mentoring, and leading design discussions while driving engineering excellence and collaboration.
Role
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Engineering Team Lead plays a pivotal role in guiding a team of Software Engineers who deliver core components of the StarCompliance Enterprise SaaS platform. This role balances hands-on technical contribution with people leadership - providing coaching, mentoring, and line management to developers while also leading design discussions, contributing to architectural decisions, and supporting the technical evolution of the platform.
As a leader within Star’s engineering organisation, you will foster a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and learning. You will help shape modern engineering practices, AI-enabled development approaches, and high-quality delivery through strong CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native design. This is a strategic, impactful role influencing both team outcomes and Star’s broader engineering direction.

- Line manage, mentor, and coach Software Engineers to support their professional growth, performance, and career development.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and capability development across the engineering function.
- Lead and participate in design and architectural sessions, partnering closely with the Architecture function to deliver compliant, scalable, cloud-ready solutions.
- Contribute hands-on to development, ensuring best practices, maintainability, and technical quality.
- Drive the adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices, guiding teams on how LLMs and automation can enhance productivity and quality.
- Own the lifecycle of delivery for your team, ensuring clear visibility of progress, quality, and key engineering metrics.
- Ensure strong adherence to Star’s SDLC, engineering standards, version-control practices, and quality expectations.
- Play a key role in defining, optimising, and maintaining robust CI/CD pipelines across Azure DevOps and associated tooling.
- Support the technical strategy and evolution of Star’s SaaS platform, contributing to modernisation, scaling, and cloud transformation initiatives.
- Work closely with Product Managers, Product Owners, QA, Architecture, and Cloud teams to ensure alignment on priorities, scope, design, and delivery.
- Advocate for engineering needs, design integrity, maintainability, and long-term platform health.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, providing clear updates, risks, and mitigation plans

Skills and Experience
- Essential Technical Skills
- Extensive experience leading and mentoring high-performing software engineering teams.
- Strong hands-on expertise with the Microsoft .NET ecosystem:
- C#, ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, Visual Studio.
- Solid understanding of web technologies such as JavaScript, React, Angular, HTML.
- Strong grounding in software engineering principles, including SOLID, design patterns, and scalable architecture.
- Experience delivering enterprise-grade, cloud-hosted applications.
- Strong understanding of relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
- Experience with modern CI/CD pipelines and cloud technologies; Azure experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with PaaS, cloud infrastructure fundamentals, and SaaS operational considerations.
- Proven success overseeing large or complex software development projects.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of working across engineering, product, and leadership teams.
- Ability to analyse requirements, propose solutions, and guide teams through delivery.
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and drive their adoption across the team.
- Experience or interest in AI-enabled engineering practices, including use of LLMs for productivity, code generation, or testing.
- Experience working in a modern, Agile, cloud-first SaaS environment.
- Exposure to microservices, distributed systems, and modern architectural patterns.
