Job Title: Local Technical Specialist – Lifecycle Engineering

Working Pattern: Full Time, Hybrid

Working location: Bristol

Grade: Level C

We have an exciting opportunity for a Local Technical Specialist – Lifecycle Engineering to join our Bristol team. This role serves to connect the Engineering for Services (EfS) engineers in the division with the ET&S Capability. On behalf of the Lifecycle Engineering Capability Lead, it is accountable for providing day to day engineering capability support to Lifecycle Engineers supporting the Defence UK portfolio, and on this basis the role resides in the ET&S Engineering for Services function.

This is a key role where you’ll be recognised locally as an authoritative source of technical and procedural expertise, driving standardisation, compliance, continuous improvement and knowledge management across Lifecycle Engineering teams. You will also support day to day product safety activity as required, and coach the next generation of specialists within the discipline.

What you will be doing

With this attractive opportunity you will get a chance to:

  • Act as a focused, local expert recognised as an authoritative source of technical and procedural expertise in Lifecycle Engineering within Defence UK

  • Ensure work conducted in Lifecycle Engineering teams is standardised and compliant to engineering processes

  • Ensure existing capabilities are well understood and utilised by Engineering Managers of retained engineers, and that needs for new capabilities are raised to the Capability Lead for development

  • Highlight capability needs required to successfully deliver engineering packages

  • Drive continuous improvement and implement effective Knowledge Management

  • Share knowledge and awareness of technical problems and issues into related disciplines within a sub-divisional area and/or across divisions

  • Support day to day product safety activity as required, acting in a consultant capacity

  • Implement local developments in response to challenges, and support other technical specialists pushing the boundaries of the capability

  • Actively lead, support and engage with relevant Communities of Practice within Lifecycle Engineering

  • Actively coach and support potential future specialists

  • Have a deep understanding of the whole service domain and full product lifecycle (preferred)

  • Be customer focused with a pragmatic approach to solving complex problems

  • Demonstrate a strong focus on driving compliance and continuous improvement

  • Be comfortable with ambiguity, able to define and implement plans that achieve business intent without detailed instruction

  • Be a confident communicator with a positive outlook when presented with challenges

  • Be committed to through-life learning for yourself and the wider team

  • Be qualified to at least degree level or have appropriate Lifecycle Engineering domain knowledge to facilitate competent management of retained EfS capability

  • Have proven, extensive experience in the application, development and sustainment of engineering capability

  • Bring a strong working knowledge and experience across the technical skills required for sustainment of engineering capability

  • Have experience applying a Systems Engineering approach or equivalent (e.g., Robust Design, Black Belt, PELA, etc.) and be an advocate of OPS and positive change
