Mō te tūranga | About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer within the Payments Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and maintaining resilient, scalable, and secure platforms that support international payments and high‑value transactions.
This includes ownership of international payment flows across customer‑facing channels, ensuring reliable, intuitive, and compliant payment experiences for customers from initiation through to settlement.
In this role, you will establish engineering standards and contribute to critical architectural decisions that address complex technical challenges across the organisation. Your leadership will enable seamless integration of Payments systems across Westpac, while ensuring holistic ownership of the end‑to‑end customer payments experience and influencing the strategic direction of the Payments domain.

Ngā Haepapa Matua | Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and implementation of solutions for international and high-value payment systems.
Drive delivery of engineering initiatives, ensuring quality through automated testing, safe deployment practices, performance monitoring, and readiness assessments.
Drive assessable devops practices and tooling which enabled all engineers to adopt “you build it, you run it”.
Collaborate within cross-functional teams to story map epics, estimate work, and manage risk to meet sprint goals, including close collaboration with digital channel, product, and design partners on customer‑initiated international payment journeys.
Ensure observability and operational excellence using Dynatrace and Splunk.
Promote best practices in engineering, including container orchestration, messaging integration, and secure API connectivity.
Mentor and support team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Stay current with industry trends and apply relevant innovations to improve engineering capabilities.
Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?
At least 8 years of commercial experience with engineering with a strong focus on Java or similar languages such as C#.
Proficiency in modern engineering practices such as contract first design, feature flagging and TDD.
Proven experience in engineering platforms within complex, high-throughput domains —ideally in payments or financial services.
Demonstrated full stack experience and mindset
Strong background in modern devops practices and tools, e.g. K8, AWS, and Azure.
Expertise in observability and monitoring using Dynatrace and Splunk.
Demonstrated ability to lead delivery, solve complex problems, and influence across teams.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and empathetically.
A collaborative mindset with a passion for mentoring and enabling others.
