The Junior Cost Manager / Junior Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial team with the financial, contractual, and administrative aspects of construction projects. This role involves assisting with budgeting, procurement, subcontractor management, progress monitoring, and general contract administration. You will collaborate with various departments, including finance, procurement, design, legal and operations, to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with contract terms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining project budgets, cost forecasts, and cash flow reports.
  • Monitor project costs and report on any potential cost overruns or savings.
  • Help track and manage change orders, variations, and claims.
  • Support the procurement process by assisting in the preparation of tender documents, evaluating bids, and issuing purchase orders.
  • Assist in reviewing and interpreting contract terms and conditions, variations, and correspondence.
  • Maintain and organise project documentation.
  • Assist with preparing and submitting progress reports, financial reports, and other project-related documents.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and contractual requirements, helping to mitigate risks and disputes.
  • Monitor contractor performance and report any issues to senior commercial or project management staff.
  • Prepare and assist in the creation of regular financial and project progress reports for senior management.
  • Assist in analysing cost data and project performance metrics.
  • Support the commercial team in identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with the project.
  • Assist in the preparation of claims and dispute resolution, working closely with the legal and commercial teams.
  • Alert senior leadership to scope gaps or potential cost overruns and provide input into value engineering.
  • Support the roll-out of VDC processes and contribute to cost estimation best practices.
  • Monitor project progress with the scheduler and track contractor obligations (bonds, warranties).
  • Attend all relevant project, commercial, and finance meetings, and document key outcomes.

Key Skills & Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • A degree or diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is often preferred. Alternatively, relevant work experience in construction may be considered.
  • Experience:
    • Some experience in construction administration, project management, or a similar role is desirable.
    • Familiarity with commercial aspects of construction, such as procurement, contracts, and budgeting, is a plus.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel (for cost tracking and reporting).
    • Familiarity with construction-specific software (e.g., Procore or similar) is an advantage.
    • Basic understanding of construction contracts (e.g., JCT, FIDIC, NEC).
  • Personal Skills:
    • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
    • Problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to resolving issues.
